Break Ins and Electricity

By tadgeobrien, 10 August, 2009

Well unfortunately I had a little B & E as the police call it. Yep my garage was broken into last week! Luckily for me I only had one item stolen, a used miter saw, while the church had their snow blower and lawn mower stolen.

See I woke up last week on Tuesday to some odd noises of a car pulling away, not much to think about since I do live about 10 feet from the road. So I walked downstairs getting ready for work, thinking that I would skip my routine of emptying the dehumidifier and grab coffee and go. So I did, and I would regret it.

I arrived home around 4:30 last Tuesday from a long day at the conference we put on each year, walked downstairs and emptied the dehumidifier. As I was gazing out my window I noticed that the garage door was wide open, but no one from the church has used the side door so I went to investigate. Sure enough the garage had been broken into. Once I check to see what was stolen I called 911 and the police arrived about half an hour later.

Granted I was so tired from my day that all I wanted to do was fall asleep, but I had to keep my eyes open. So the police took my statement, called their crime scene people, and I left to grab a new lock for the door. When I got back the police had left, and I finally got the lock installed around 7:30.

So here it is a week later, a new lock and a new motion light! Yep I had purchased the motion light almost a month ago and now I am installing it. Needless to say I didn't hurry prior to this because most of the materials in the garage were the churches, and I figured we were okay, guess not!

Since last week I found that the police may have found the church's stuff, but no one has called to let me know. Either way I spent the last 6 hours trying to install a motion light. Yep I said it SIX HOURS! I have never installed any lights that needed to be wired so I turned off the electric in the garage, open up the switch box, and started to try to figure out what I was doing. Needless to say I got about 3 shocks and said few a cuss words before remembering I had a book that was suppose to help me with this!!!!

So I went in a grabbed my book and spent about the last 2 of the 4 hours wiring the lamp correctly and now am sitting in my office watching the cool glow of florescent in my backyard. Now I have to figure out how do I make it so that the lights turn off after they have come on! Anyways I am now going to be looking over what to do as a whole with the garage, as I want to be able to use it as a work space, but not have to spend all of my time making sure everything is as secure as Fort Knox. I don't think it will be hard to do, just not at the top of my list.
